wootz Jonker Street, Melaka. Our hotel was right around the corner, so every evening I walked these streets. The old shophouses, the lights, the smell of food — it never got old. And my favorite ritual: stopping by the 7-Eleven next to the hotel every day just to talk with the staff. If I skipped a day, it felt like something was missing. ★★★★★

bambam I really like Jonker Street. There were many different kinds of food to try, and so many beautiful cafés to visit. Honestly, I also loved the hotel — the bed was incredibly soft and comfortable. It made our whole stay even more enjoyable. 🛏️ ★★★★★

wootz I met a friend in our English Communication class — a Chinese-Malaysian student. Neither of us speaks perfect English, but we both tried. He invited me to grab food at Jonker Street, walking around looking for a place to sit and eat. That was one of the first times I had a long conversation in English with someone I barely knew. ★★★★★

bambam One activity was "Finding the Buddy." Through this, I met new friends and found my buddy, Johnson. He was quite shy at first, but very friendly and kind. We talked a lot and I really enjoyed getting to know him. I never thought I'd make a real friend in another language. 🤝 ★★★★★

wootz Coming from Thailand where smoking in public is restricted, this hit me hard. Walking down the street and the air just smells like cigarettes. One time someone flicked their cigarette right onto the sidewalk as they walked past me. I had to hold my breath more than once. Not the country's fault — just something we weren't prepared for. ★★★★★

bambam For me it wasn't as bad, but yeah — you smell it more than you'd expect, especially near busy footpaths at night. If you have asthma or are sensitive to smoke, just plan your walking routes. We didn't realize how spoiled we were by Thailand's smoking laws until we left. ★★★★★

wootz Ordered street food by pointing at pictures and holding up fingers. One auntie asked me something in Mandarin — I just answered in English. She laughed, I laughed, I still got my food. Sometimes Grab drivers don't speak English either — Google Translate became my best friend. Honestly? It was fun. 😅 ★★★★★

bambam For me the bigger challenge was vocabulary and accents. Some people used words I had never heard before, with accents I wasn't familiar with. And sometimes, they didn't understand what I said either. It works in the end, but the first few seconds are always a little scary. ★★★★★

wootz Don't get me wrong — Malaysian food is amazing. But after a while, the heavy spices and the carb-heavy plates started catching up. Rice, noodles, more rice. Not enough vegetables, not enough protein. I started craving som tam and tom yum like crazy. Thai food balance hits different when you've been away from it. ★★★★★

bambam Most of the food was chicken and curry, which made me feel a bit bored at times. The rice was also slightly harder than what we usually have in Thailand. I love the flavors, but variety is something I started to miss after a few weeks. ★★★★★
